ABC’s of Spa Maintenance

INITIAL FILL UP OF SPA:

  1. Metal Gon or Metal Control is a mineral sequestering agent.  Add 8 ounces (if necessary) per 500 gallons of water to remove minerals such as iron, copper & manganese. *normally added when source is hard water.
  2. Test Alkalinity & pH using your test strips and adjust if necessary
    • Alkalinity should be between 80 – 120 parts per million (ppm)
    • Alkalinity can be raised by adding baking soda as well as Spa Up
    • pH of water should be between 7.2 – 7.6 (FYI: pH = percent hydrogen)
    • Adjust pH using Spa Up or Spa Down if necessary.
    • Add Spa Up or Spa Down one ounce at a time, and allow 60 minutes for water to circulate before re-testing and adding more.
  3. Add one tablespoon of chlorine granules (Spa 56), or 2 Bromine tablets.
  4. Test water hardness, if low add calcium booster 1oz retest after 60 minutes (calcium hardness is CH on test strip)

NOTE: Do Not add chemicals all at once – Will cause foaming. Allow time for chemicals to adjust to water balance.

WEEKLY CHEMICAL MAINTENANCE:

  1. Test pH and Alkalinity levels and adjust if necessary.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of Chlorine granules (Spa 56) or Bromine tablets.
  3. Add Renew, or spa oxy shock which is a non-chlorine shock.  Add 2 tablespoons per 500 gallons.

NOTE: Add Chlorine & Shock on different days for maximum effectiveness, and to reduce foam. (Add Chlorine on Mondays, and Renew on Fridays for example)

An Ozone system will negatively affect the chlorine or bromine reading on a test strip. Do Not add more than recommended.

MONTHLY AND QUARTERLY MAINTENANCE:

CLEAN FILTERS:

  • Filters can usually be cleaned simply by spraying with hose.
  • Optional ways to clean would be to soak filter in filter cleaner or white distilled vinegar for 2 hours and allow to dry, Filters can be placed in dishwasher, however, do not use detergent, and do not use dry cycle that could melt the ends of the filter.

The Nature 2 system, or Spa Frog, should be replaced every 3-4 months

DRAIN AND REFILL SPA EVERY 3-4 MONTHS

  • Turn heat down on spa and use breaker to turn power to spa off.
  • Most spas have a drain.  Simply use this or attach hose to this to drain spa.
  • If spa does not have drain, use hose or pump to siphon water.
  • Clean spa shell using mild soap and water.  Avoid using any abrasive cleaner that can scratch    the finish of spa.
  • Refill and turn power on (Make sure spa is full before turning power on.)
  • With spa running, set temperature and filtration cycles.
  • Repeat steps for Initial fill up of spa (SEE ABOVE).

            * ALWAYS REFILL SPA THRU FILTER TO AVOID ANY AIR LOCKS *
